Published Jul 05, 2016Before Bon Iver's Justin Vernon was organizing his own music festival, designing shoes and winning Grammys, he was just a smalltown dude in a band. A band called Mount Vernon, to be precise, and now footage of that group performing at a high school battle of the bands has surfaced online.
The set was filmed on November 15, 1998, at Memorial High School in Eau Claire, WI, and it sees the nine-piece group playing tracks that would eventually appear on their debut album We Can Look Up. In addition to Vernon, the lineup featured Phil Cook, Brad Cook and Joe Westerlund, who all went on to collaborate with Vernon beyond the walls of their high school.
