Watch Best Coast's Bethany Cosentino Discuss Music Industry Sexism on 'The Daily Show'

BY Sarah MurphyPublished May 5, 2016

Best Coast's Bethany Cosentino has been a vocal defender of women's rights, penning personal essays for Lenny and jumping to the defence of Dirty Projectors' Amber Coffman when she accused publicist Heathcliff Berru of sexual harassment earlier this year.

Continuing the fight against sexism in the music industry, Cosentino appeared on The Daily Show last night (May 4) to talk about that battle. Host Trevor Noah asked her about her decision to support Coffman in the midst of the accusations, and she discusses embracing her unexpected role as a spokesperson for female empowerment.

Cosentino also sheds light on the instances of discrimination she's faced performing as a female in an otherwise all-male band, citing the example of playing venues where sound guys assume she doesn't know what she's talking about or doesn't know how to plug in an amp because she's a woman.

On a slightly more optimistic note, she does also assure viewers that there are some totally supportive dudes out there, and those are the ones she tries to surround herself with in her day-to-day professional life.

Check out her conversation with Noah here, beginning around the 15-minute mark.
