Watch a 'Silicon Valley' Commercial Featuring Godspeed You! Black Emperor

Montreal symphonic rock legends Godspeed You! Black Emperor have always had a strange relationship with licensing their music, famously turning down a wide variety of filmmakers in the late '90s and early 2000s. In more recent years, they've allowed their songs into a small batch of projects, and last night they let their music be played over a tech commercial on HBO's hilarious Silicon Valley.

The tongue-in-cheek ad for the show's fictional "middle out compression" company Pied Piper spoofs the best clichés of modern advertising, from heart-warming stock footage to groan-worthy narration with plenty of mixed metaphors. The inclusion of Godspeed's music adds another layer of hilarity. After all, their iconic sound has been so often imitated in ads, movies and television shows.

According to a representative from Constellation Records, Godspeed approved Silicon Valley's usage of "Gathering Storm" from 2000's Lift Yr Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven
