Warlocks

Psych-rock fans will find lots to love on the new eight-song, 70-minute, Warlocks EP. Capturing all of the band's promise and pitfalls, it kicks of with the infectious pop of "Baby Blue," drops into a meandering stoned jam on "Oh Sandy," then kicks back with the spectacularly fuzzed-out Spaceman 3 trance-pop of "Stone Hearts." The album's remaining tracks are a similar mash of high-quality freak-out and low-grade trip working on the '60s psych/'70s Kraut-rock axis. Leading this keyboard, bass, dual-drummer and four-guitarist onslaught is songwriter Bobby Hecksher; it's fantastic to hear how locked-on his band can get with the right material. Let's hope for more of the good stuff on the impending full-length.
