Death/doom denizens Warcrab extricate themselves from their UK-based fens to shell out another slab of bottom-heavy metal with Damned in Endless Night. Featuring new vocalist Martyn Grant, these proceedings exude a different vibe than 2017's Scars of Aeons, though the guitar triumvirate of Geoff Holmes, Leigh Jones and Paul "Budgie" Garbett weave enough classic riffs to make this a majestic homecoming for fans.
Album intro "Perpetua" sports glistening, echoing chords that frame the slow burn of "Halo of Flies" like late-career Carcass. The double-kickdrum fest of "In the Arms of Armageddon" is immediately doomier with an EHG-esque solo section that bathes the band in noxious sludge. "Magnetic Fields Collapse" wouldn't seem out of place on a Bolt Thrower album, while the main doom progression in "Abyssal Mausoleum" resembles the mid-song advancement of Rush's "The Camera Eye" as played by UK proggers End of Level Boss.
Scandinavian mythology is used as the lyrical inspiration for the Unleashed-like "Kraken Arise," and most of "Unfurling Wings of Damnation" seems like a paean to post-metal pummellers Pelican until it erupts into blackened death near the end. Outro "Damnati" highlights more of Holmes' righteous chordage before the feedback fades out. Crustacean jokes notwithstanding, Warcrab seem happy to inhabit the murky waters between Crowbar and Gatecreeper with Damned in Endless Night.
