After retiring from touring two years ago, Wanda Jackson has announced her forthcoming final album Encore — co-produced by fellow rock legend Joan Jett. It's slated for release on August 20 via Big Machine/Blackheart.
Recorded just before announcing her retirement, the Queen of Rockabilly describes Encore as "one of the most personal pieces [she's] ever released" over her illustrious career. Jackson rose to fame following a series of hits between the late '50s and early '70s, including "Let's Have a Party, "Funnel of Love" and "Fujiyama Mama."
She's tapped fellow Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Jett and Kenny Laguna to produce her 32nd album, which also features Elle King, Candi Carpenter and Angaleena Presley of the Pistol Annies. Jackson penned half of the eight tracks herself, alongside a medley of co-writers (including Lori McKenna, Will Hoge, Luke Laird and Sonia Leigh).
In a statement, Jackson said:
Right around the time I retired from performing and what I thought was the end of my career, I found myself back to writing songs with some of the great writers in Nashville. The songs you hear are truly my life story. This is the first time I have ever inserted so much of my personal life into my music. You'll get a picture of my early life and have a peak into the closeness that my late husband Wendell and I had in our life together. I'm happy to share this with all of you — your constant love and support has seen me through the ups and downs of my 64-year career.
