Wallgrin, the moniker of Vancouver violinist and pop experimenter Tegan Wahlgren, has signed with Heavy Lark records with plans for a new album this summer. Ahead of its arrival, Exclaim! is proud to present the release's lead single.
Lush and densely layered, "Two-Mouthed Woman" is an excellent introduction to the artist, pairing her penchant for earworm melodies with a clear knack for arrangement.
The song will appear on Bird Alien, Wallgrin's debut album for Heavy Lark. The album was self-produced by Wallgrin throughout recording sessions in Vancouver, Berlin and a cabin on Vancouver Island.
Of the release, the label offered the following statement:
Interweaving legends and folklore amidst intricate harmonies and pop sensibilities, Wallgrin gives voice to the mythological beings that have long occupied the fringes of the cultural imagination. Bird/Alien explores the inner lives of the most sinister creatures of legends, embodying their anger, jubilation, sorrow and tenacity. Banshees scream over the murmurs of forgotten demigods; the cries of harpies cut through rich primeval hymns. The album depicts a deeply intimate look into these imagined lives, all while questioning the symbolism of gender in mythology and the expressions of femininity and masculinity in relation to power.
