Marshall is best known as a multi-instrumentalist in the genre-mashing Canadian pop band Walk Off the Earth. He's got both an Emmy and a Juno to his name, and now he's releasing his debut solo album. Layers is out today though Nettwerk and is available to stream in full.
As you'd hope from a member of Walk Off the Earth, Layers is eclectic and sonically lush, with a vibrant palette of pop and R&B. Marshall self-produced the album, which touches on sultry electro-soul on "Mr Parachute" (featuring Jocelyn Alice), glitchy synth balladry on "Shadows" and hip-hop-inflected pop-rock on "I Could Be the One."
The album features songs written while Marshall was living in Los Angeles. While the results draw on that city's rich tradition of pop music, the dark moods are far removed from the California sunshine.
