Vox Vermillion

This Minneapolis quartet have put forward a superb collection of moody, vaguely trip-hop oriented songs with their third record. Drums thump tastefully between cascading keys and mesmerising string arrangements to give the whole album a playful, impassioned push. The true revelation here is vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Kelsey Crawford, a wondrous singer with a gifted ability to turn a phrase. With a presence that is part Billie Holiday and part Björk, Crawford is captivating on songs like "Up in It,” "Controller,” and "Wanted,” giving each its own unique hook. Infectious yet unassuming, Standing Still might be a sleeper hit in waiting.
