Solitude

BY Sara MontgomeryPublished Jul 1, 2000

Solitude is offered as a soundtrack to the movie you'll see when you close your eyes. If this was for an actual film, it would probably be directed by Jim Jarmusch and nothing much would happen. People would drive long distances and smoke more than they talk. This recording veers between classic Ventures territory and a modern, dare I say "alt" take on the country ballad that leaves few surprises, except for the funereal charm of "Lonely Way To Go." Volebeats rhyme their lyrics so immaculately you can almost predict the next line. In less able hands this would bore, but Solitude appears to tap into universal themes, musically and lyrically. Closing tune "Music Box" really sounds like one with the lid about to fall, a great way to end a disc that is at times both haunting and playful.
