The Vertical Scratchers "These Plains"

The Vertical Scratchers "These Plains"
Former Enon/Brainiac member John Schmersal had hinted that his new band the Vertical Scratchers' upcoming Daughter of Everything for Merge Records would feature a number of songs under the two-minute mark, and the guy is keeping his word with the LP's first buzzy sneak preview, "These Plains."

Owing to the band's Buzzcocks influence, the scrappy power-pop number rumbles by on a busy backbeat and slightly overdriven six-string melodies that sound as if they could just as easily fit onto Spiral Scratch as on the Vertical Scratchers debut.

"Part of the aesthetic we we're establishing when writing Vertical Scratchers songs was to maintain a sense of urgency and raw energy without relying on volume and distortion," Schmersal had previously said in a statement. "I wanted the guitars to sound light and jangle-y and most songs were purposefully sang in a soft falsetto. "

Daughter of Everything hits stores February 25.
