Published Sep 19, 2012It's been 45 years since the Velvet Underground released their seminal 1967 debut with Nico, and we've already learned that the occasion will be marked by a deluxe six-disc reissue. Just one week after that box set comes out on October 30, we'll get another anniversary release in the form of the tribute album The Velvet Underground & Nico by Castle Face and Friends. It's due out November 6 through Universal Music and Castle Face Records.
Just like the title suggests, this tribute album contains cover versions of all 11 tracks from The Velvet Underground & Nico performed by the folks at Castle Face Records, the California record label co-run by John Dwyer of Thee Oh Sees. Some of the most noteworthy contributors include Ty Segall ("Femme Fatale"), White Fence ("Run Run Run"), the Fresh & Onlys ("All Tomorrow's Parties") and, of course, Thee Oh Sees ("European Son").
Label co-head Matt Jones said in a statement, "Covering The Velvet Underground & Nico in its entirety sounded like a great idea, and since we had already planned a label wide sleepover it just felt right. If you listen closely you can hear that most of the percussion is the sound of popcorn kernels and empty nitrous canisters being shaken in the box my digital delay came in."
The album will be available exclusively on vinyl, but you can preview it digitally when one song per weekday is released to participating websites from October 15 through October 29.
This isn't the first time that The Velvet Underground & Nico has received a full-length tribute album. Back in 2009, Beck and friends performed the album for his Record Club project.
