For last year's Vancouver Folk Music Festival, local songwriter Veda Hille created The Memory Project by writing songs based on fan-submitted memories of past instalments of the festival. The concert wasn't properly recorded, but Hille and her so-called Memory Choir entered the studio to record the songs this past spring.

The Memory Project is a 23-minute song cycle, which was recorded by Colin Stewart (Black Mountain, the New Pornographers) and Mariessa McLead at the Hive. It features a host of singers including husky-voiced heartthrob Dan Mangan, klezmer troubadour Geoff Berner, onetime D.O.A. member Ford Pier, Hille's longtime collaborator Barry Mirochnick (Veal, Whitehorse, Neko Case) and more.

The Vancouver Folk Festival takes place this weekend (July 19-21). See the lineup here.
