Published Aug 15, 2008I'm no expert on the current state of hardcore but what I do know is that like most genres, it's running rampant with more followers than leaders. Maybe I'm just being sentimental and perhaps a bit biased because they hail from my hometown, but I've got to give it up for Hamilton, ON's Vatican Chainsaw Massacre. I wouldn't call them innovative by any means, but shit, they certainly know how to breathe some new life into the scene.
As we previously reported, the boys have signed to Hamilton metal pusher Goodfellow Records, and are currently prepping their debut album, Hazy Skies Over Marthas Vineyard, which was recorded at Burlington's B-town Sound with producer Donny Cooper (Cursed, Chore, Hoosier Poet), for a release later this year.
Taken from Hazy Skies Over Marthas Vineyard, "Fantasy Camp" is just as swift and blinding as most hardcore but unlike most hardcore it doesn't forget to breathe. Like Fucked Up, VCM know how to work a riff into a steady groove without trying to out-crazy other bands with transitions and breakdowns. They still fit some in there, but this is almost worthy of cruisin' to. That sounds a little too Beach Boys, I know, but this shit would sound lethal blaring from even the shittiest of rides. And how about those vocal karate chops on Kevin Sheeler? He barks with a rhythmic blow, like he's trying to out-heavy the fuckin' music.
