Toxic

BY Heidi ChapsonPublished Jun 1, 2006

Based on the Parisian underground Toxic parties, the 20 tracks on this compilation were chosen by none other than the originator of the Shaolin Soul compilations, Uncle O, along with Solo, a former member of the French hip-hop duo Assassins. Reunited on this album we find some new and some hard-to-find ’80s tracks heavily influenced by electro, hip-hop, funk and punk. Luckily though, this one leaves behind most of the kitsch that can usually be found on albums that try to assemble cuts reflecting the "irony” from that era. Some of the noteworthy tracks that can be found on this compilation include "Moscu Esta Helado” done over two and a half decades ago by an industrial trio out of Spain, as well as Reanimators’ (aka Uncle O & Solo) "Toxic Bird Cage.” The great thing about Toxic is that it fuses new and old seamlessly. Included for good measure are some cats such as Jel, Beans and Mike Ladd who put forth their unique blend of hip-hop and electronics.
