Superrappin’

BY Del F. CowiePublished Aug 1, 1999

This German underground hip-hop compilation brings crucial attention to some under-appreciated beats and rhymes. Sporting a line-up ranging from veterans to new jacks, the compilation’s common trait is its consistency. Established names like Boston veteran Ed O.G., ex-Artifact El Da Sensai and stalwarts like Rasco and the High and Mighty make particularly strong showings, but artists based outside the States more than hold their own. The strong Canadian contingent includes Frankenstein & Choclair’s “So I,” Da Grassroots’ “The Price of Livin’” featuring Mr. Roam, and the dubby “Following Goals” that teams the unique voices of Toronto’s Mathematik and Bahamadia. Not to be outdone, Walkin’ Large and female MC Brixx who hooks up with the ultramagnetic Mos Def on the melodic “If It’s Alright Y’All,” represent the German side of things. Sure there are a few clunkers among the 18 tracks and there are probably too many mid tempo beats, but Superrappin’ easily puts to shame any filler on any pseudo mix tapes currently making the rounds.
