Sub Rosa Vs Shi-Ra-Nui

BY Chris TwomeyPublished Sep 1, 1999

Sub Rosa's trip-hoppers, including DJ Wally, remix tracks from five of Japan's Shi-Ra-Nui crew, on this first in a series of label clashes that next engages Fat Cat and Mike Ink's Kompakt family. The Japanese producers, including Cappablack (who was featured on the enticingly priced Out Of Perspective compilation), are all making interesting versions of hip-hop and junglist forms, like DJ Tati Monji's raw acoustic grooves in "Black Lightnin" (remixed by Ui's Sasha Frere-Jones). Actually, the Sub Rosa remixers include two of the best from Japan, Bisk and Multiphonic Ensemble, showing just how much depth there is to be discovered in the country's breaks prefectures.
