Punk Goes Crunk

BY Sam SutherlandPublished May 25, 2008

First thing’s first: most of these bands aren’t "punk” and nearly all the songs aren’t "crunk.” Yes, they rhyme and yes, Lil John impressions are so very cool but there’s something unsettling about a whole compilation of young white kids basically mocking African-American culture. There’s a fine line between covering a song and parodying it, and while Set Your Goals somehow get it right with "Put Yo Hood Up” (proving that Lil John may be the best hardcore hype-man since Roger Merit), the rest of this disc is basically the sound of white emo bands snickering at how black hip-hop artists pronounce things. The only surprise here is Emanuel’s take on Purple Ribbon All-Stars’ "Kryptonite,” which is somehow awesome. Otherwise, this is obviously lame, possibly offensive and surely the greatest waste of plastic since the last Punk Goes... compilation. Please stop.
