Poker Flat Vol. 4

BY Marinko JarebPublished Jul 1, 2005

German label Poker Flat is DJ/A&R man Steve Bug’s baby. As an artist and DJ, Bug is known for his minimal yet super funky sound. Over the years, he’s collaborated with, among many, Richie Hawtin and Toronto’s now defunct Stickman Records. Bug’s clean, bass-heavy, largely house influenced style has remained quite consistent since the start and though the sound has been laid out for nearly a decade, Poker Flat has become an avenue for perfecting the formula. A DJ label producing mainly twelve-inch records, this compilation is a collection of the most stunning tracks and remixes the label has to offer. The first disc is a straight compilation of tracks from beginning to end, while disc two is a continuous mix by DJ/producer Jeff Samuel who has some great records out on Cologne-based label Trapez. There is no surprise in that it’s a solid tech house collection with some moments of acid goodness and a subtle bit of electro flavour, however, John Tejada’s "Sweat (On the Walls)” really stands out. With contributions from Martin Landsky, Detroit Grand Pubahs (think "Sandwiches”), Sweden’s Alexi Delano, the Martini Bros., Guido Schneider, ADJD, Jeff Samuel and Bug himself, this compilation is an underground dance masterpiece. Killer!
