A Nod to Bob

BY Michael JohnstonPublished Jun 1, 2001

To commemorate the 60th birthday of the most important American songwriter of the 20th century, roots label Red House has assembled an acoustic tribute record to Bob Dylan. Many of the artists included here (Norman Blake, Spider John Koerner among others) have a shared history with Dylan, and all have been clearly influenced by his recordings. Surprisingly, it's a cohesive listen. Guy Davis' soulful take on "Sweetheart Like You" and Ramblin' Jack Elliot's sublime cover of "Don't Think Twice It's All Right" standout from the many heartfelt - though typically unoriginal - covers on the album. For the uninitiated, this collection provides a nice sampling of great songs performed by a reverential cast of players.
