Kozzmozz: Spread The K...

BY Prasad BidayePublished Oct 1, 2000

Kozzmozz brings out techno the way most underground purists like it: minimal in structure, maximal in pressure. The bulk of this compilation (DJ Pierre, Ben Sims, Soul Destroyaz, Chris McCormack and Gillespie) operate on those simple pleasures. Justin Berkovi's "The Frequencies I've Had" and Jay Denham's "Pride (It's Time") extend the format further with robotic, electro-fried vocals - the latter featuring a black power chant. Technasia's "Cyclone" is a funkier groove with a slight disco sensibility. But nothing here is as rhythmically exciting or melodically engaging as the electro-bass instrumentals from Detroit - K1's "Agenda" and Drexciya's "Species of the Pod." "Signals," the closing track from Transmat's Microworld, offers a subtle alternative as well.
