INCredible Sound of Trevor Nelson

BY Del F. CowiePublished Jun 1, 2000

Over in Blighty, Trevor Nelson is quite the big R&B kahuna. His involvement in national radio shows, television and spinning at exclusive clubs ensures Nelson has his fingers in more than a few pies. As the latest participant in the INCredible series, Nelson's selections are hardly as eclectic or underground as those of previous invitees Gilles Peterson or Goldie, but there are some choice nuggets to be found. Most of them, however, are not on the "Hot" disc on this compilation. Nelson's definition of hot unfortunately confirms the unwavering spell Stateside R&B holds on the UK. Virtually every selection is either an R&B or hip-hop record that's been flogged to death in the past couple of years, or a mediocre single from an American artist included at the expense of UK talent. Thankfully, the "Cool" CD is more inclusive and miles better, tapping into Nelson's roots in rare groove and soul, unearthing slinky mid-tempo tracks from UK soul mainstay Mica Paris, Brand New Heavies and an early effort from Smith & Mighty cohort Tammy Payne. Formidable floor-fillers like Masters At Work's "I Can't Get No Sleep" and Gwen McRae's "Funky Sensation," albeit in diluted remixed form, are notable bonuses to a compilation that would have definitely benefited from a closer adherence to its second half format.
