Impeach the Precedent

BY Kevin JonesPublished Jun 1, 2005

It’s fairly safe to say that nothing is more convenient and effective in getting a political message out to young people than a banging’ soundtrack — a reality not lost on the good people at Kajmere Sound. Satisfied with the success of the "funky precedent” they set back in ’99 with a phat collection of West Coast funk and hip-hop that benefited various public school music programs, the crew have returned with a brand new cause and a whole new set of rump-shakers. Impeach The Precedent packs the heat of some of today’s most reliable dance floor fillers in Breakestra, Jazzanova, Antibalas, DJ Shortkut and others, united here as the agents of a call to action against the destruction of the world’s rainforests. The record kicks off in high gear with Ugly Duckling’s DJ Einstein teaming up with MC Zaakir on "Have and Have Nots,” and J-Live lecturing about respect for Mother Earth on "Give It Up.” Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings keep the political fires burning, releasing some frustration over the American war machine with "What If We All Stopped Paying Taxes,” before Damon Aaron cools it down a bit with a soulful tune about a broken down bungalow. With proceeds from the sale of this comp going directly to the Rainforest Action Network, Kajmere (and their environmentalist cohorts) are guaranteed to have another success on their hands.
