Various Hip Hop For Respect

What the fuck?! El-P and DMX on the same cut? Well, as much as you might hope this is some horrific nightmare, the track is just one of four posse cuts on the Hip Hop For Respect maxi-single organised by Mos Def to protest police brutality after four New York police officers murdered West African immigrant Amadou Diallo. Now, I respect their intentions, but honestly, some of those cats making appearances shouldn't even be rhyming, even if it is for a very good cause. With all proceeds going to a non-profit foundation, I'm sure I should be giving this release plenty of props but I can't because the numerous wack MCs destroy all the effort put in by those artists with some actual skills. "One For Love - Pt. 1" features Kool G Rap, De La Soul's Pos, Common, Pharoahe Monch, Sporty Thievz, Shabaam Sahdeeq, Rah Digga, Talib Kweli, and, of course, Mos Def. The list for the rest of the maxi-single is extremely long, but names worth mentioning are RZA, Cappadonna, Dead Prez, Heltah Skeltah, Ras Kass, Pras, and the above mentioned rapping opposites, El-P and DMX. I will give them plenty of credit for some solid, rocking beats, but it's just too bad another good message is ruined by sub par appearances. (Rawkus)
