Various Future Jazz

The jazzy electronic tip is one that many compilation series have mined to great and lesser success, including the prominent Rebirth of Cool series, and Instinct’s own “Future Sound of Jazz” releases. Future Jazz continues in that vein with success, but increasingly these are simply dance compilations that may have an occasional trumpet sample, but really have little to do with jazz at all. The Hagans track “Animation/Imagination,” Yennah’s “Afghanistan Banana Stand” and Spacetime Continuum’s “One At A Day” are among the most “jazzy” things here, but many of the other tracks, from the likes of Carl Craig’s Innerzone Orchestra, DJ Krush and Toshinori Kondo, and Kruder & Dorfmeister remixing Count Basic, are simply mid-tempo dance tracks that fit the prevailing vibe. Not a bad thing at all, in fact quite good — just don’t call it jazz. (Instinct)
