Fat Beats Volume 3

BY Del F. CowiePublished Dec 1, 2003

Drawing together old and new tracks, up and comers and veterans much like the previous compilations in this series the selections here are mix-show-ready tracks. Leading off in impressive fashion, "Tension” is a new Little Brother track finding Phonte and Big Pooh in battle mode atop yet another production gem from 9th Wonder. However, the teaming of Big Daddy Kane and DJ Premier for "Any Type of Way” is a bit underwhelming. Primo has a healthy presence on this compilation and his fingerprints on submissions by Beantown MC Krumbsnatcha and the NYG’s provide better results. Pete Rock also appears more than once, holding down "Shine on Me,” the recently bubbling reunion track with CL Smooth and the comparatively ancient "World Renown,” the all-star tag team track by Norwegian producer Tommy Tee. Of the new fare offered up, J-Zone takes time out from slinging his politically incorrect verbals to deliver his NBA season preview on "Alley Oop ’04.” Not one to bite his tongue, J-Zone gets pot-shots in at Kobe Bryant among others and dubs Toronto’s team the Craptors. Aside from other tracks by Skam featuring pre-crossover Eminem and DITC that go back a few years, the tracks offered by lesser known newer acts are unfortunately filler for the most part and detract from what is essentially an above average compilation that would have benefited from a tighter thematic focus.
