Destination House: mixed by Deepfeel

BY Vinita RamaniPublished Jul 1, 2001

Texan DJ Deepfeel remixes some of the big names in house music in this release, which is a part of New York label Topaz's DJs series dedicated to the genre. The mix is a soulful journey and undoubtedly a display of Deepfeel's devotion to the father figures of house. It begins with C&M Productions, featuring Marcel on vocals, offering a long soundscape intro, like a monologue about the redemption promised in the world of house and soul music. The rest of the mix features tracks by David Morales and Dennis Ferrer, amongst others. Morales' track features both his current work with Albert Cabrera, as well as the tearing vocals of Deanna, but it is the middle tracks, courtesy of Dennis Ferrer, that are explosive and deeply moving. Craig David may be taking the UK two-step garage world by storm, but the disco love on tracks such as "Unconditional Love," featuring Chris McCray on vocals, as well as "So Beautiful," with Anthony Flanagan, reach right to the heart. Like the muted horn section on Roy Davis Jr.'s "Gabriel," the subtle trumpet solos on "So Beautiful" add a sweet touch to the uplifting vocals. This is a deft and perfect dance floor mix featuring all the right ingredients, from infectious four-to-the-floor rhythm to R&B/soul vocals, muted horns and memorable bass refrains. There are gospel-like moments from Jasper St.Company's "Music" and a resonance of Lisa Shaw on Lovetronic's "You Are Love." A perfect party from start to finish.
