Bad Scene, Everyone's Fault: Jawbreaker Tribute

BY Stuart GreenPublished Sep 1, 2003

Although Jawbreaker were always considered one of the best of the early pop punk bands, they never quite received their due. They came close right before their implosion in the mid-’90s, but it's only in recent years the genius and undeniable influence they had on the scene has begun to get the credit they deserve. This 18-track tribute features largely literal interpretations of tracks from the 'breaker's six year's worth of musical output. Face to Face, Nerf Herder, Kill Your Idols and Riddlin Kids and several lesser-known bands are among those paying tribute without straying too far from the originals. Only Duvall's doo-wop version of "Busy,” the Æffect's electroclash treatment of "Boxcar" and Sparta's psychedelic acoustic interpretation of "Kiss the Bottle" play with the original arrangements. But whether literal or creative, all the songs are respectfully delivered and serve to highlight the brilliance of a band that was years ahead of its time.
