Various Traxx: The House That Garage Built

British dance label Needwant conceived of their latest collection, Traxx: The House That Garage Built, as a tribute to NYC's early '80s garage house scene, but instead (or as intended), this 16-track compilation works as a showcase for some of Europe's best up-and-coming disco traditionalists. Focusing on artists favouring vintage production techniques, sounds and equipment, Traxx is presented as a modern DJ mix, complete with digitally processed low-end and faultless beat matching and fading. Seemingly anchored by patented piano chords and diva vocals, most of the producers on Traxx deliver a flawless retelling of this pre-techno brand of club music. Throwbacks like Belfast wunderkind Ejeca and UK virtuosos Huxley and Purple Velvet provide authentic bangers, as compiler Sean Bronson flawlessly blends them into garage remixes of club floor favourites from artists like Ben Pearce, Disclosure and Rachel Row. Although nothing here breaks the mould (once again, as intended), it's the DJ mix quality of the comp that gives Traxx its distinct, groove-inducing personality. (Needwant)
