Clicks & Cuts 5.0

BY Andrea AyottePublished Jul 5, 2010

The legendary Click & Cuts compilation series returns after Mille Plateaux's primary label, Force Inc., went bankrupt in 2004. Marcus Gabler (a music industry entrepreneur) announced the label was back earlier this year. In the early '90s, Mille Plateaux played a key role in generating a new outlet for artists such as Kid 606, SND, Frank Bretschneider, Twerk, Vladislav Delay, Gas and Oval to exist, becoming one of the best avant-garde labels of its time. Click & Cuts didn't just become a compilation series, but contributed to naming and defining a new genre. On Clicks & Cuts 5.0, Gabler aspires to introduce a new generation of young artists to a wider audience. Aoki Takamasa's opening track, "RN4-09," is a delicious merging of glitch and dub, comparable to the sounds of Byetone. Tokyo-based musician Ametsub delivers satisfying glitchy IDM melodies with his submission of "Repeatedly." Marow's "e.coli" is a slow building track with mesmerizing, warm tones that gradually form a sense of uneasiness. Clicks & Cuts 5.0 is an excellent release and a welcome return.
