Various Brownswood Bubblers Six: Compiled by Gilles Peterson

In the age of online streaming and "hear it before it hits the streets" uploads, it may seem that UK groove purveyor Gilles Peterson has lost a bit influence. Nonetheless, the man who coined the term "acid jazz" continues to trudge ahead with his latest collection of unearthed funk, hip-hop and soul, Brownswood Bubblers Six. Released eight months after volume five, Peterson treats fans to exclusive tracks, along with new remixes, like Italian soul-crooner Raphael Gualazzi's ballad, "Reality and Fantasy," and the dubstep meets club-step of Submotion Orchestra's "Finest Hour." Volume six remains as varied as ever, but this time around Peterson relies more on downtempo and throwback jams. Album highlights like Great Weekend's perfect American disco imitation ("Let's Do It Again"), Javelin's nod to Peterson's acid jazz of old ("Intervales Theme") and Pedestrian's riot grrrl gone wild dance party ("Hei Poa") see Brownswood Bubblers Six discovering the gems like the Internet never existed.
