Earlier this month, we learned that HMV's flagship Vancouver location would be closing its doors forever in January 2012. Now that the city's biggest record store has announced its demise, it's not too much of a surprise that one of its most treasured boutique indie shops, Scratch Records, will also be scaling back its operations.
Scratch has announced that it will now only be open on Saturdays from noon until six, and during live concerts at the adjacent Interurban Gallery. These once-a-week openings will be called Blammo Saturdays, and these will give the store a chance to sell off its stock at low prices.
Owner Keith Perry told the Georgia Straight, "I'm sitting on tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of CDs and records that have accumulated over the years, and having these Saturday sales is one way of sharing some of the stuff that we've accumulated and blowing it out."
A message on the store's website reads, "We promise every Saturday will be a special bonanza of storewide sales with new product brought in from our distribution and label warehouse weekly."
Scratch celebrated its 20th anniversary back in 2007 but was forced to move from its Richards Street location in 2010 to a much smaller store in the city's Downtown Eastside, a move that saw the shop/record label severely cutting its distribution wing.
This development comes hot on the heels of the news that now-defunct Vancouver video store Videomatica is moving its sales division into the city's Zulu Records, located just down the street from its longtime location.
