Vancouver's P:ano Reunite for First New Music in 17 Years

"I am loving that the band I started with Larissa [Loyva] in high school has been getting together regularly after a 17-year sabbatical and playing together and making new songs," says Nicholas Krgovich

One of the under-appreciated gems of Vancouver indie music has returned, as songwriting polymath Nicholas Krgovich has revived his 2000s cabaret pop band P:ano to contribute to a compilation.

The four-piece of Krgovich, Larissa Loyva (a.k.a. Kellarissa), Julia Chirka and Justin Kellam reassembled for the first time in 17 years for a cover of "Hollow Stars" by the Beans. It's for the album Zum Audio, Volume 5, a 25th anniversary compilation for the label Zum, and it was in this spirit of retrospection that the band decided to reunite.

In a statement, Krgovich said that turning 40 last summer "made my late teens and 20s feel very far away and alien and kind of fun to think about."

It's not entirely clear if this single is going to be a one-off or if P:ano have a full-blown comeback planned, but Krgovich has hinted that they've got more things in the works, as he said, "I am loving that the band I started with Larissa in high school has been getting together regularly after a 17-year sabbatical and playing together and making new songs. Just for fun!"

Hear P:ano's comeback cover of "Hollow Stars" below. Zum Audio, Volume 5 comes out August 18 and can be pre-ordered on Bandcamp.
