Vancouver indie pop singer-songwriter Michaela Slinger has announced her sophomore album, previewed by new single "Everything I Wasn't Looking For."
This Can't Last Forever is due May 26 via 604 Records. It follows Slinger's debut, 2021's Panorama.
While Slinger counts herself as somewhat of a skeptic when it comes to spiritualism, the writing process for the LP was foreshadowed by a FaceTime call her sister convinced her to take with a psychic in 2021. Going on a gut feeling, the artist had to "force myself to be really small fish in these big, intimidating ponds," like the major music markets of Los Angeles, Nashville and Toronto. In the span of just over a year, she completed nine separate songwriting trips.
Radiant new single "Everything I Wasn't Looking For" was borne of one of said trips, co-written with Khalid Yassein of Wild Rivers.
"When I'm writing with someone new, the first hour or two is often an expansive discussion about music, life and relationships. I was set up with Khal from Wild Rivers, a band I love, and we wrote in his partner's little barn on the back of a family property an hour outside of Nashville," Slinger explained in a press release.
She continued:
In a rare turn of events for musicians, we both realized we were in healthy, stable, long-term relationships — and in both cases, we didn't set out to find a partner as much as the connection just happened. Once Khal started playing some chords on the keyboard, the song came pretty quickly. It's about letting yourself be loved, accepting something when it feels easy, and not overthinking or trying to find red flags. The chorus feels like that acceptance to me: the first half is like being pulled into the arms of someone you love, and the second half captures the freedom that comes from knowing that you're where you're meant to be.
