Published Dec 19, 2011With DJ Premier, Pete Rock, DJ Dopey and Skratch Bastid among the judges, Canadian DJ Hedspin (aka Hedley Tuscano) took home the belt as the new Red Bull THRE3STYLE champ on Saturday (December 17) after a week of fierce competition in Vancouver. Beating out a choice selection of DJs from around the world, Vancouver favourite Hedspin earned the highest marks in originality/creativity, track selection, technical skills, stage presence and audience response, effectively scoring the title of World's Best Party Rocker DJ.
Armed with an Akai MPD midi controller, ace scratching skills and a dash of spectacle (which came in the form of a rabid fan hoisted above the crowd in an inflatable dinghy waving a Canadian flag attached to a hockey stick), Hedspin fended off vicious challenges from runners-up Nedu Lopes (Brazil) and DJ Bazooka (Switzerland). Nedo Lopes, who won the Tuesday night qualifier (December 13) to earn his spot in the finale, took home third place with his scratchtastic, stuttering, funky set. Thursday night (December 15) winner Bazooka picked off second overall with his confetti cannon climax.
The last three finale competitors, Supa! (France), Big Once (USA) and Bitcode (Spain), all tried admirably to upset the competition, but were ultimately unable to overcome the fist-pumping, bass-thumping allure of the title-holder.
So, who is the world's best party rocker? Well, one of our own of course.
