Published Sep 23, 2015Vancouver musical polymath Chris van der Laan has had a relatively quiet few months by his standards, but the man of many projects (including the pop-punk act Wars, electro-pop duo Heavy Steps, rap collective Too High Crew, drone metal outfit Hurricane Ripped My Jacket and more) has announced plans to dip into his archives for a retrospective release. He will be reissuing the complete catalogue from his old pop-rock band Baby Control through his Boat Dreams from the Hill label.
The 22-song compilation is called Gravy Control: Discography 2005-2009. It will be coming out digitally and on cassette on October 2.
The 11 songs on the A-side come from the 2008 album Best War. On the B-side, six songs come from an an unreleased 2005 EP called Babies, two songs come from a 2009 split (with Tacocat and Triumph of Lethargy Skinned Alive to Death), and three cuts are unreleased practice space recordings. There are covers of Bikini Kill, Huggy Bear and Nirvana.
All these oddments have been mastered by Jordan Koop (The Courtneys, Nicholas Krgovich, You Say Party) at his Noise Floor Recording Studio. For a taste of the comp, hear "Best War" at the bottom of this page.
This Discography will be followed by a reissue of a split cassette from the spinoff projects Babe Patrol and Slim Fathers entitled The Scene Has Cruised / Fluff Era Pt I & Pt II. A live set from each band will be included; Babe Patrol's 2009 set features Exclaim!'s own Gregory Adams on vocals, while Slim Fathers' half from 2014 features Twin River's Courtney Ewan on vocals. This split tape will arrive on October 9, also through Boat Dreams from the Hill.
