Published Mar 21, 2012Despite its genre specific banner, the TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival serves up a diverse roster of artists each year, with everything from traditional jazz to R&B to indie rock popping up in concert halls and clubs around the city. The 2012 event, running June 22 to July 1, should be no exception, with news that futuristic soul singer Janelle Monáe and turntablist extraordinaire Kid Koala have been added to the festivities.
It's still unclear exactly when Monáe will deliver the follow-up to her smash 2010 set The ArchAndroid, but it's plenty possible that the singer will trot out some new stuff when she performs at the Centre on June 29.
Other acts showing up for the festival include Kid Koala, who stops by to perform his book/album project Space Cadet three times over the course of two days (June 27-28) at Performance Works, and folk outfit the Avett Brothers stop at the Orpheum on June 26. The previously noted Destroyer gig at the Vogue Theatre on June 29 is also part of the Vancouver International Jazz Fest.
Representing the underground jazz scene, experimental locals the V. Vecker Ensemble -- a multipiece unit made up of members of No Gold, Nü Sensae and Basketball, and led by Cowards singer Keith Wecker -- will perform at the Ironworks on June 22.
