Vampire Weekend guitarist/keyboardist and producer Rostam Batmanglij has been getting a lot of outside action these days, having now announced that he'll next be scoring a Broadway play starring Michael Cera and Rookie mag founder/fashion figure Tavi Gevinson.
The latest production of Kenneth Lonergan's 1996 play This Is Our Youth will be staged in both Chicago and New York this summer, and will be produced by Scott Rudin. Details on Batmanglij's score are sparse, but it will be first heard June 10 at Chicago's Steppenwolf Theatre Company, with the play's first run taking place June 18 to July 27. From there, the production moves to New York's Cort Theatre, with previews starting August 18 and the official opening set for September 11.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the play will star Cera, Gevinson and Kieran Culkin as a trio of friends in 1982 New York, with the play centred around a 48-hour period of time that has them discussing the transition between their 1960s upbringing and the emergence of Reaganomics in the U.S.
Off-Broadway performances and stagings in London have had the roles filled by the likes of Josh Hamilton, Mark Ruffalo, Missy Yager, Hayden Christensen, Matt Damon, Colin Hanks, Jake Gyllenhaal, Casey Affleck, Anna Paquin and Alison Lohman.
On top of his upcoming score, Batmanglij is also featured on the Walkmen singer Hamilton Leithauser's impending solo debut, Black Hours. That record recently faced some setbacks and is now slated to hit stores June 3 through Ribbon Music.
