Uke-Hunt

"Because" (Dave Clark Five cover)

Spike Slawson has been crooning out countless covers with pop punk tribute band Me First and the Gimme Gimmes for close to 20 years now, but the singer is stripping away the distortion on his self-titled debut release as Uke-Hunt. The record drops today (June 10) through Fat Wreck, but in case you need some extra nudging, you can check out a preview of the set via a stream of album track "Because."

A press release notes that the record comes a dozen years after Slawson first picked up the ukulele, which he began to master over the years while busking on a San Francisco wharf with his buds. Like Gimme Gimmes releases, Uke-Hunt has Slawson handling a number of covers, this time delivering tender run-throughs of Depeche Mode's "Enjoy the Silence," Barry Manilow's "Ready to Take a Chance Again" and more.

Uke-Hunt's island-styled cover of the Dave Clark Five's "Because" is filled with fluttery, four-string work and ahh-inducing organ lines, with Slawson getting extra blue-eyed as he delivers the romantic ballad's lyrics.
