Ubiquitous Synergy Seeker

Questamation

The debut album from this Parkdale duo is as busy as their name. Opening track "Cloudboy" immediately smacks you upside the head with myriad samples and styles, with the resulting sound being reminiscent of Pendulum covering the music from Dune. Cutting through this fog of influences is the quality of the production: very little is lost in the mix, despite there being much to lose, and the depth of sounds varies as much as the instrumentation. It makes a huge difference, as music like this doesn't work without it. Like Thunderheist, USS are successfully combining electro indie with drum & bass backbeats; it's an unlikely combination that results in dancing legs and sweaty stomachs. I can't decide whether it's the pure novelty value or musical brilliance that makes me like this album so much but either way it seems this genre might have a very short shelf-life, and USS may find themselves falling out of favour just as quickly as they fell in.
