Tres Chicas

Sweetwater

BY Matt CharltonPublished Jun 1, 2004

Tres Chicas combine the vocal talents of Whiskeytown’s Caitlin Cary, Glory Fountain’s Lynn Blakey and Tonya Lamm of Hazeldine. The group is a fairly straight-up country music based vocal group. Their debut, Sweetwater, is a mixture of originals and covers ranging from George Jones to Lucinda Williams. The disc shows the group’s huge vocal harmony talent, but everything on the disc feels just too safe. Where the similar sounding Be Good Tanyas deliver their angelic harmonies with a bit of darkness lurking at the edges of their music, Tres Chicas play things pretty straight up. Their songs never really develop beyond "pretty” and the covers they play lose much of the dark underbelly that made them so memorable in the first place.
