Transmissions From the Heart (of Winnipeg)

FESTIVAL

BY Rob NayPublished Oct 1, 2004

For one week each autumn, the stark quietness of Winnipeg’s downtown is disrupted by groundbreaking transmissions. Sounds that range from mesmerising to jarring resonate through the city’s looming collection of century-old buildings. Since 1998, Send + Receive: A Festival of Sound has featured a wide assortment of experimental music and sound art. This year, the seventh instalment runs from October 15 to 24, showcasing the talents of local artists (Ken Gregory, Clive Holden, Jacky Sawatsky), along with national (Peter Courtemanche, Annabelle Chvostek) and international artists (Peter Brotzmann, Peter Cusack). With everything from free jazz to electronic music, audiences can expect a multitude of captivating sounds. The festival’s complete line-up can be found at www.sendandreceive.org
