Scandinavian throat singing and chanting is mixed with synthesisers, guitar washes, shamanic frame drums, samples and loops of historical recordings to generate a gothic industrial-folk dirge. It’s a dramatic mixture that too easily reaches an hysterical pitch. This could be a great setting for performers like Diamanda Galas who scream out for excess. Interesting as this experiment is, it’s most satisfying in the minimalist “miesse” and the sparser lyricism of “sarek” with its atmospheric blend of acoustic guitar, cello, gongs and percussion.
