The Tragically Hip have become tragically hemp by announcing a partnership with Canadian medical marijuana producer Newstrike.

The announcement of the investment and marketing partnership was made by the band today (May 30) "after much discussion and assessment," with the iconic Canadian group adding that "this company — and the many creative people in it — are a perfect fit for the Hip."

In a statement on their website, the Hip wrote that medical marijuana "already greatly benefits the health and well being of many of our fellow Canadians," and that the federal government's upcoming plans for legalization in 2018 is "common-sense-policy and, in our opinion, is a change for the best."

"There is a commitment from the Federal Government to legalize recreational use in just over a year, and with good reason," the band wrote. "The harm wrought by the prohibition of marijuana has been thoroughly researched and documented."

Newstrike is based in Brantford, ON, and received its cultivation licence on December 19 of last year. The band wrote that the company "has done its due diligence with respect to all aspects of this business. They've hired pre-eminent scientists and growers, developed large, well-structured sites and have the wherewithal and expertise to take this on."

Perhaps the partnership could also lead to a meeting with Snoop Dogg, who partnered with Smiths Falls, ON marijuana producer Tweed last year.
