Tragedy Strikes Halifax Musician in New Orleans

BY Cam LindsayPublished Feb 15, 2007

A former musician in the Halifax music scene and his wife were brutally attacked on the morning of January 4 in their New Orleans home. Dr. Paul Gailiunas was wounded protecting their two-year-old son, Francis, while his wife Helen Hill was fatally shot when a stranger shot the couple at their front door. Gailiunas, a former lead singer and songwriter with the popular East coast band Piggy, and his wife Helen, a celebrated filmmaker and animator, made the Big Easy their home back in 2001. Together they were known for their social activism and significant contributions to their community, especially in the wake of Katrina. The motive for the incident is still unsolved; Gailiunas and his son are currently recovering at his mother’s house in Vancouver. Helen Hill was 36.
