From the Gasworks through Larry's Hideaway and Big Bop, there have been many notable venues in Toronto's rich musical history. Few of them tend to last for any serious amount of time, however. Revered as one of the city's greatest rock'n'roll landmarks -- not to mention as a point of interest due to its junk-encrusted exterior -- live music house the Bovine Sex Club (542 Queen St. W.) is one of the more enduring locales. It's a point the venue plans to celebrate over the course of the next month in honour of reaching its 20th anniversary, in fact.
Opened by partners Darryl Fine, Wes "Happy Dog" Thuro and DJ Chris Sheppard in 1991, the Bovine has not only hosted an endless array of legendary performances and events but has even been a featured location in many photo shoots, videos, television programs and motion pictures. A quick read of bodies gracing its dazzlingly cluttered interior also yields members of Guns N' Roses, Metallica, Foo Fighters, Mötley Crüe, the Strokes, Perry Farrell and more, not to mention what the venue refers to as, "you had to be there nights with Mickey Rourke and Nick Nolte."
Festivities for its China/platinum commemoration get underway Saturday (February 12), when Warped Tour founder Kevin Lyman plays DJ before the Flatliners and Saint Alvia take the stage.
Keeping the partying going in style, both current and previously defunct acts have signed on to take over the Bovine during ensuing weeks, finding the likes of Robert Gordon, Carole Pope, Asexuals, the Sinisters, Closet Monster and surprise guests paying proper respects to the club that gave them their shot, a moment of glory or an evening of debaucherous revelry.
