Toronto's 21C Music Festival will return for its seventh edition this January, and organizers have now shared the lineup of performers and composers set to take part.

Running from January 11 to 25, the 2020 edition of the festival will celebrate "Fearless Musicians" and "Fresh Sounds" at the Royal Conservatory of Music's Koerner Hall, Mazzoleni Hall and Temerty Theatre.

The fest's 2020 edition features a performance from award-winning American composer Laurie Anderson, who will perform alongside cellist and longtime collaborator Rubin Kodheli. Anderson's January 18 performance, however, is already sold out.

Other festival highlights include Against the Grain Theatre bringing Ayre and other works from Argentine composer Osvaldo Golijov to the stage. The production stars Canadian soprano Miriam Khalil and was staged by the Canadian opera collective's artistic director Joel Ivany.

Elsewhere, French-Canadian bass-baritone Philippe Sly will offer up his "fresh 21st century theatrical take" on Franz Schubert's song cycle Winterreise, newly arranged for violin, clarinet, trombone, and accordion.

The festival also features a program from tabla master Zakir Hussain and jazz bassist John Patitucci, conducted by National Symphony Orchestra of India musical director Zane Dalal.

The performance features the Canadian premiere of Hussain's Peshkar concerto, and the world premiere for Patitucci's Hypocrisy for orchestra and jazz trio. The latter features Danilo Pérez on piano, Brian Blade on drums and Patitucci on bass.

Pérez will also leads musicians from Palestine, Greece, Jordan and Panama in a separate performance as Danilo Pérez's Global Messengers. The performance will feature an opening set from Juno-nominated saxophonist Allison Au, whose quartet will also perform alongside special guest Laila Biali.

Previews of the four aforementioned productions can be found below. Further 21C Music Festival and ticketing details can be found through the Royal Conservatory's official website.
