Toronto Public Library Gets Set to "Make Some Noise" with Bruce Peninsula, Timber Timbre, Katie Stelmanis and Grand Analog

"Shhh!," the uptight Librarian, bespectacled and cardiganed, used to hiss as she pointed irritably at the "Quiet" sign, or at least that's what the old funnies comics had us thinking. Well, no more: as part of the ongoing "Make Some Noise" initiative, the Toronto Public Library has announced a batch of in-house musical performances from some prominent members of the city's independent music scene.

Exclaim!-approved acts Grand Analog, Bruce Peninsula, Katie Stelmanis and Timber Timbre will all be performing at three of Toronto libraries in November.

Grand Analog will play at the College/Shaw branch and then hold a DJing workshop later, also at College/Shaw. At North York Central Library, Bruce Peninsula and Timber Timbre will play together as part of a Polaris Music Prize nominee set (what, no Fucked Up?).

According to the press release, youth collections librarian Lisa Heggum is "excited to bring the library's local music CDs to life. Any hip-hop band that features the venerable kazoo in their music has got to be worth checking out. And Bruce Peninsula and Timber Timbre were both nominated for the Polaris Prize this year, so you know that's going to be a great show."

The "Make Some Noise" initiative has been in effect for four years now, during which the Toronto Public Library has collected a vast amount of music that they urge patrons to borrow as regularly as they do books. "The collection demonstrates the library's commitment to the local music scene in much the same way our collection of local and Canadian fiction demonstrates our commitment to the local literary scene," says Heggum.

Additionally, the library has worked with both Soundscapes and Exclaim! to ensure that the libraries stay on top of up-and-coming talent.
