Tool have an extremely devoted fanbase, but one diehard's tribute to the band was quashed by California DMV. More specifically, someone tried to purchase a custom licence plate inspired by Tool, but it was deemed to be too lewd.
Los Angeles Magazine [via Stereogum] acquired a list of thousands of rejected applications for vanity plates. These rejected applications include the applicant's explanation of the licence plate, plus the DMV's justification for rejecting the request.
The list reveals that one Tool fan tried to get the vanity plate "AENIMA." The fan's explanation reads, "The rock band Tool's second album title from 1996." Predictably, the DMV responded with: "Custom meaning is true, but sounds like Enema."
We're guessing they wouldn't accept any Puscifer tributes either.
Some other rejected licence plates include "FUKTRMP," "BLUE ME" and "DICKOUT." The whole list of the funniest ones can be seen here.
According to official policy, the DMV rejects "any personalized licence plate configuration that [carries] connotations offensive to good taste and decency."
Meanwhile, Tool are nearing the finish line with their new album. Perhaps it will have a clean enough title to be put on a custom licence plate?
