Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers

'Hypnotic Eye' (album stream)

BY Alex HudsonPublished Jul 22, 2014

Tom Petty has been talking up his new album with the Heartbreakers as a hard-hitting rock record, and now we can hear Hypnotic Eye in full. Ahead of its July 29 arrival on Reprise Records, it's available to stream in full at Exclaim.ca.

The record charges out of the gate with the crunchy riffs of "American Dream Plan B," which includes a melodic, acoustic-flecked chorus. Elsewhere, "Faultlines" is a wah-laced bass groove, and the meaty six-string riffs of "All You Can Carry" will give the axe-wielders loitering around Guitar Center lots to get excited about.

The Hearbreakers pare things down for the jazzy "Full Grown Boy" and atmospherically nocturnal "Sins of My Youth," but this mostly makes good on Petty's rockin' promises.
